THE WORDS THAT MATTER

Memorial inscription ideas.

A name. A memory. A few words that say so much.

You don’t need to find every word straight away. Start with the person’s name and the details you want to remember, then add a line that feels personal. We can help you bring it together.

BUILD YOUR TRIBUTE

A typical inscription, step by step.

This is a starting point. You can keep it simple, change the order or leave out anything that doesn’t feel right.

  1. Choose an opening line

For example, “In Loving Memory of” or “Treasured Memories of”. An opening line is optional.

  2. Add the person’s name

Use their full name, the name they were known by, or a familiar name in brackets. The name is usually the most prominent part of the inscription.

  3. Include the dates

You might use full birth and death dates, just the years, or the date of death with their age. Check every detail carefully.

  4. Describe their place in your life

A short line such as “A much-loved husband, dad and grandad” or “A dear friend to many” can make the tribute personal.

  5. Add a closing line or verse

Choose a short phrase, one of the verses below or words of your own. A simple inscription can be just as meaningful as a longer one.

  6. Consider the layout and future space

We’ll help balance the wording with the stone’s shape, lettering and artwork. Tell us if you would like space for a future inscription.

FROM YOUR WORDS TO THE MEMORIAL

How the inscription is prepared.

01

Share your wording

Send us your draft, the chosen memorial and its cemetery or churchyard. If you are adding lettering to an existing stone, photographs help us understand the available space.

02

Agree the design and quote

We discuss the lettering style, size, finish and layout, along with any artwork. We’ll confirm the proposed work and costs in your written quote.

03

Check and approve the proof

Review the proposed inscription carefully: names, spellings, dates, punctuation and line breaks. Tell us about any changes before you give your final approval.

04

Prepare the lettering

Once your wording and any required permission are agreed, the inscription is set out and produced on the stone using the lettering method and finish chosen for your memorial. We then check it against the approved wording.

Before the work begins: we’ll check the relevant cemetery or churchyard requirements. The permitted wording, design and finish can vary. For an additional inscription, we’ll discuss how closely the existing lettering can be matched.

WE’LL HELP YOU FIND THE WORDS

Bring us your ideas.

A few notes are enough to start. Tell us who the memorial is for, the wording you have in mind and where it will be placed.
